A new book series has just been released for all the preschool and kindergarten early readers in the world. Tori’s Books are a collection of sight word learning books with colorful pictures and easy to follow language. The repetition and playful story will have your child reading independently and to others. Learning to Read

I had the joy of working with a group of kindergartens who were struggling with reading. The opportunity only lasted four weeks and within those four weeks not only did the five-year olds gain a love for reading, they learned the tools needed to read. The steps I took to encourage reading were I started with a journey through the book. This means we go through the book discussing the pictures on the pages. My Kindergartener the writer

My five-year old does not like to write, so I had to think of an activity to encourage writing. I had her write the sight words that were sent home in a composition journal. I then told her we would write a story together, with the length depending on how far we can go with the story. Sight Word Practice

My first grader is learning sight words and the teacher sends home four words a week which most times are words that were learned in kindergarten. I decided to purchase a packet of sight word cards for kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. The cards are kept in a coupon holder and everyday we practice ten words. The words that she knows goes in one compartment, the words that she hesitates with goes in another compartment and are repeated the same day, and the words that she does not know goes in another compartment and are repeated the next day….
