My five-year old does not like to write, so I had to think of an activity to encourage writing. I had her write the sight words that were sent home in a composition journal.
I then told her we would write a story together, with the length depending on how far we can go with the story. The goal was to use as many of her sight words we could, and to help her with sentence structure and spelling.
We decided to write daily, three to four sentences as apart of her homework. I write one sentence and then she continues the story with another sentence, and then I write another sentence to continue the story and so on.
Not only has the activity helped her sentence structure, spelling, and comprehension, it has also changed her attitude toward writing.
